I'm actually a copywriter but I'm trying to get into article writing - I have a meeting lined up with an editor in a couple of weeks but I want to have some idea of fees beforehand.
I would probably specialise in mainstream magazines like Homes %26amp; Garden with lifestyle/design pieces, 2,000 words-ish long.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Does anyone know how much writers are paid for Magazine articles?
This depends on the magazine you're writing for, the market you're in (i.e. the UK or US) and lastly how much experience you have.
Here is a link to the National Union of Journalists freelance fees guide (for UK journalists but I think the advice is applicable to those in the US also): http://www.londonfreelance.org/feesguide...
Typically if a magazine has a hefty circulation and is a 'big' national or international title such as Cosmopolitan or Glamour you will be compensated pretty well.
Reply:Agree with caretoshare. it depends on the magazine but as you have a meeting lined up i'm sure they will tell you how much they are prepared to offer for your work. OK you might want more but writing for magazines is in such demand it might be a good idea to start off for little less than you would like just as long as you've got your foot in the door.
Good luck by the way!
Reply:My sister is a field editor with Better Homes and Gardens. Prior to that, she made a living as a freelance nature/travel writer, sometimes having her articles begin in one magazine and travel to others.
I remember being on an airliner in the 80s, picking up the in-flight publication and finding a piece she'd written about Alaska that had been published before.
She just kept submitting articles to various publications until one bit. After that first one, others followed.
Fees vary. Are you a member of the Writers Guild? It's a good outfit for you to join.
Reply:Depends on how well they are known, who they are writing for, and what they are writing about. If you have no experience you should expect to earn very little to start with until you are proven
Reply:It varies widely...anywhere from NOTHING on up. Have you checked the website for this particular magazine? There is usually a section called "Guidelines for authors" that will include what they pay per article.
If you want an "average" though, I have been paid typically between $250 - $350 for a 1000-2000 word article.
Reply:Far too much. Journalists are basically muck-rakers.
