I am a garden designer and have been approached by a client to build a gazebo-like structure but the twist is that they want there to be curtains of water falling on all four sides of the structure so they will look out through the water! Has anyone built anything like this before or know how to go about it? any help would be fantastic! Thanks
Please help! need to design a gazebo with waterfalls as walls!?
I would explain to them that they will need something to keep the water from splashing. I would probably set it up with recirculating pump, and about three rows of pipe with enough holes to cause the effect.
On the outside or inside, you can line with some sort of material, glass, good plastic, etc.
I studied garden design some years ago. The above is my best shot. If you don't have something other than water wind can blow it all about. Not good, people won't like the wet all over themselves and guests.
Of course the water will fall into a pond effect more like a moat system.
Reply:First find four good pumps that can handle large volumes of fluid. Study up on concrete construction for your uprights large enough to handle a three inch pipe going up through center of each connected to your pumps connected to your reservoirs which will be handle like a swimming pool for cleanliness and odor. Your uprights will support your troughs carrying the water and supporting the roof, the outboard side of the trough will be lower running the distance of each upright with level stainless embeds for five sixteenths to half inch stainless NC bolts that are one and half inch in length.
Acquire three sixteenths thick stainless flat bar that are one inch longer then the length of the outboard low spots and have local Fab shop break them exactly to width necessary and punch slots of evenly spaced stainless embeds to match outboard side might as well have them punch a three sixteenths rubber gasket to seal the blade that will maintain an even flow of water over the straight edges of your dams.. Probably good to bone up on hydrodynamics too. The water will be spilling into another trough directly below a third wider and deeper than the upper, which will be filled first half three quarter plus gravel then covered filter paper and smaller gravel on top or what ever would look at that point blend it in. This lower trough will be replenishing the reservoirs that are buried somewhere that are connect to a supply and the pumps.
You can use rough-cut one by's for your forms and dye the concrete to any color your client want.
That's my idea and I'm stickin to it.
Good Luck and your project sounds fun. I like doing special request like this need any help you can contact me through Answers just have fun with it
Reply:Keep to what you know best, or you may bankrupt yourself and your client still won't be satisfied with your work.
Reply:I have built a water wall before that will work for you. You can contact me via e-mail and we can discuss it. I have many picture. This project of yours will be quite extensive in detail. It will not be cheap either. bfuhrman@midwestgrounds.com or visit midwestgrounds.com
Reply:I really like the idea %26amp; have thought about designing something similar - just in my head. I would check out the landscape waterfalls at a building supply superstore to get an idea of how they work. If I actually did it, I think a standard shallow well pump would have the capacity to pump all the water needed. I would run a supply pipe inside each pillar with a valve on each to control %26amp; equalize water volume, each pipe emptying into a long, narrow, well supported plastic tray. the tray would have to be level end to end, without a bow in it, and tilted so one side is slightly higher than the other. Of course all the plumbing %26amp; trays would be hidden by the structure of the gazebo.
Your customer has come up with a very intriguing idea which could become a lucrative specialty for you. I know my sister would love one at the right price. And your question made me think about how to make something like this work.
I see one drawback of such a design. In order to have 4 waterfalls, there would have to be no wind if the occupants wish to stay dry. However, by shutting off approriate valves, the gazebo can stay dry.
Let me know how this works out. And welcome to our site. Watch out! It gets addicting.
