Plants for a rock garden?

I live in the west of scotland and would welcome any ideas and/or websites for design.

Plants for a rock garden?
lavendar, heather, grasses ect........ some herbs will be good for a rock garden...
Reply:Hens and chicks! They are very hardy and attractive..
Reply:Go to the alpine section of your garden centre and you will see all sorts of plants that will grow well there for example thrift and sedums.
Reply:Oh my goodness, there are LOADS of plants you can get for a rock garden!!

Its not really the time of year at the moment as a lot are finishing flowering, but go to your local nursery, market or garden centre and head for the alpine section. Dont be ripped off though. For a small alpine you should only pay about £1.00. I recently did my front garden with alpines and this year they have come up a treat.

Choose plants like saxifraga, aubrieta, phlox %26amp; frigillanas Herbs and lavender also do really well. There are loads, loads more to choose from i just cant remember all the names!! Have a look on internet to get some ideas.

Good Luck!!
Reply:you could try better homes and garden (bhg.com) i found a nice plan for a front bed. you might have to change some of the plants to things more native in your area.
Reply:Moss!
Reply:ya man get some moss, some ferns and some kind of forest flowers...that s wht i would go for
Reply:what is your climate like?

cold by my standards (if its not 70degrees Fahrenheit, its winter)

chrysanthemums grow very well in the northern us

easy to root from cuttings and they like cool weather just fine

I live in georgia now usa and our roses are just passing their first bloom of spring

3D House Floor Plan Programs: Which is Better?

I am a beginner and am looking at turbo floorplan pro at $120.00

and Better Homes and Gardens House design for about $70.00.

Is Turbo floorplan better, but overkill?

3D House Floor Plan Programs: Which is Better?
I have Better Homes and Gardens Deluxe...but I think it has the same things as the one you are looking at.

I like it, however I have not tried nor heard of turbo floorplan pro. The 3D rendering for both look pretty compatible, but I think BHG might be a little nicer so it really comes down to user friendly. Look at the galleries for both products. Also I get new item downloads almost every month for mine via email. I have used a couple other products for school and work and they all basically work the same, it's just about all the little extras and how smoothly it works. I see the turbo floorplan is on sale for $90 right now, and they have a free trial, why don't you try the trial to help make a decision.
Reply:Ya Turbo floorplan is totally better coming from someone who has no clue wat that actually means... It sounds cooler..

Would anyone be interested in a "virtual garden",where you could visit everyday, watch me do all the work,

contribute to it, have a garden room dedicated to you, help design etc.? My husband retired %26amp; we moved here on a 2 acre ridge in the mountains because he had inherited it. I'm a CNA but I'm stranded on this mountain because I have a phobia of driving, I've never had a license. I bought this pc a year ago to make money %26amp; I've wasted this past year trying. Surveys etc. isn't working for me. I've considered breeding dogs, but that didn't pan out.I want to rent garden rooms out for weddings, I've been working on it for 5 years now%26amp;I need help getting it together. I I love playing in the yard , so why not try to earn a living doing what I enjoy. My question is would anyone be interested in a web page like this; I'd take pictures everyday%26amp;update,etc.I will eventually have my wedding rooms for rent, but I could use some help. Wouldn't you like to help design, watch it grow, %26amp; enjoy without the labor? And how many people likes to garden%26amp;can't . You could even design your own room for your wedding

Would anyone be interested in a "virtual garden",where you could visit everyday, watch me do all the work,
That is amazing, what a good idea. Wonder how you would get in going though?

What's your favorite HGTV and/or TLC interior design show?

Designer? Carpenter? I like them all and have no favorite. But I love Trading Spaces, with or without Paige. I love Laurie and Genevieve, and I love Amy Winn and Carter. (I wasn't certain if this would be under Decorating and Remodeling or Garden and Landscape or both.)

What's your favorite HGTV and/or TLC interior design show?
Love TLC design shows. I agree Trading Spaces is great, with or without Paige. Like most of their designers. Although it freaks me out when they do really wild stuff that you know people will hate. I end up feeling bad for the folks who have to live with the wacko designs! Especially some of Hildies!

On HGTV I really Debbie Travis' Facelift. I remember her back in the day when she had the little show where she went in a did crafty type stuff in peoples houses. She's come a long way!

Also like Ty's new show on ABC, Extreme Makeover. They build some amazing houses, I love the way they really design to the needs and personalities of the families! And it's nice to see folks who've really had some tough times get some help in a major way.
Reply:This is a no brainer....REBECCA's GARDEN. She covers a lot of stuff, inside and out.

Alot of the other shows just move furniture and a LOT of paint.
Reply:My favorite shows on hgtv aren't design shows but I love House Hunters, What's with that house, Offbeat America and Extreme Homes!!

Whate are the best home design/decor magazines?

Reply:BHG has a whole bunch of different sister magazines out there- such as Do It Yourself and Good Housekeeping is another good magazine also.Just go to a magazine stand or a home improvement store and look through the shelves and you will see how many different ones that there are and then you decide which looks like the best!
Reply:My personal favorites are Architectural Digest and Cottage Living. I guess it really depends on what you like design wise. If you are into architecture with upscale design ideas try Architectural Digest, if you prefer a warm cozy, cottage feel, go with Cottage Living, it's not crafty cottage decor either which I can't stand. I also like Domino, it's young and fresh with a mix of modern and antique. Also if you like Do it Yourself ideas try BHG's Do It Yourself Magazine.

Sensory Garden creation?

I want to convert two tennis courts into a sensory garden for people with physical and mental disability.

How much would this cost, ball-park figure?

Removing existing surface

Hard and soft Landscaping.

Plant purchase and planting.

Design fees.

I guess it would be similar to an installation found at the Chelsea Flower Show - that kind of scale.

thanks.

Sensory Garden creation?
You're looking at between 35 and 60K, depending on where you live and on the terrain, etc. Best practices on such a large scale job are to contract 3-5 landscapers and let them make bids. Remember that water features are an important aspect of sensory or any gardens, for that matter, so you'll need at least 2. They can be simple, however, and needn't cost more than 1K for each.

For gardens this size you will need 3 part-time gardeners or one fulltime gardener during the exhibit season. In winter, you will need a part time gardener to ensure debris is picked up and hardscapes are protected from elements. You may also want to use gardens for wildlife feeding stations in winter, so this could be a year-round venture.

Basic breakdowns should be requested when choosing a bid, so you'll be less likely to go over budget. This should also include disposal of demolished materials, such as the concrete from your tennis courts. Ask for references and contact the people to see their gardens in person, if possible.

One more little detail--With a venue like this which is open to the public, you will need to provide adequate parking for tours, people to conduct tours and insurance in case of accidents on the property. You might also need to spend some money on advertising (brochures)and handling calls, etc. for booking tours.

Here's a site with more information:

Happy Hiring!

Reply:sex
Reply:It depends on how you want to go and how MUCH YOU WANT TO SPEND, you can hire a contractor to tear up the "tennis court" and do it in a step wise fashion and it may save you some money, call around to see what landscapers in your area are willing to lend a hand, I mean if it is for a "charity type thing" . What state is the garden gong to be in?

Did you ever think about incorporating the existing TENNIS COURT SURFACE into a partial walk way? I can see it in my mind, use a standard cut off saw to cut and remove the bed space areas that you would want removed(where the soil could be brought in).... now is this going to be a "ornamental garden" or also "food crops" ~ like tomatoes etc? I mean you would want to be careful with teh SOIL in such a case, you would not want the "food crops" sucking up any of the "residues" from whatever it is that is in teh "tenis court covering" etc etc (soil safety) from teh sound of the project it sound like you would be bringing in soil..... you could have a little greenhouse or trellises and other stuff... the path could be covered with a smooth surface, but perhaps just PAINTED because there may be someone in a WHEEL CHAIR who would then be able to cruise around the area.

but as I said I did not know how much you had to spend? if you would just want to hire your average "landscape contractor" and go that route, not doing any of the "legwork" yourself well the guy who answered 35k or more may be in the ball park.... but as I said I could see in my mind that a project like this coudl be done nicely for 10-15 thousand if you got the right people together....

as far as maintenance, you may be able to find a retired couple or individual even who would want to maintain such a GARDEN out of the KINDNESS OF THE HEART.... now I do not know if youa re doing this for financial gain as like part of a clinic you run or something or if it is just something you are doing with no financial gain attached, it should not matter either way, the best CARE that a facility can give to someone who is "underpriavledged" or impaired in the way/reason you suggest you are doing this to say, well it is to the better.

But to employ someone to maintain it, it depends you could just hire someone from a landscape firm to come and maintain it based on how often it needed maintained, weekly, biweekly etc, so that really not be that much consider such a cost variable, but once the whole PROJECT is put in, and depending on what is involved well it will vary.... is there standard weeding which needs done, trimming, watering? Maintenance on other things like benches or trellis(usually separate projections of "wear and tear" to be considered) Logically I could shoot out a figure of no more than a couple to a few hundred a month perhaps, so what's that well it depends is it seasonal where you are ? do you have winters?

stone walls and or out-crops? (they always look nice to me, incorporated in with landscaping)

Best Interior design software that is not hard to use?

What would you think..i need names... Money is not an issue... I am just really into it...I don't need the where i have to make my own floor plan...

I have Better homes and gardens Home designer suit 8.. but I don't like how it is formated.

Also what do the pros use and is their software hard to use. I heard of Auto CAD or something like that.

Thank you ahead of time

Best Interior design software that is not hard to use?
Yes I use auto cad, and yea it takes a few lessons to learn, but I think it's the best. Also they use vector works, but that maybe more complicated than useful to you. Also kitchen designers, bathroom designers, use a program call 2020 its the easiest one I know of out there. Good luck learning the new programs, hope my advise was helpful!
Reply:Try Smartdraw. It has a 7 day free trial with an option to buy. The software comes with premade templates or you can draw your own. In the free version there are a lot of categories and options of "things"- ie... bathroom, has 5-7 different shower ideas. try it out. It can't hurt.

I can't find the perfect wedding invitation design?

looking for an invitation design that I like is becoming a headache. Were having a Garden wedding in August. Can anyone recommend any sites to check out with some really nice designs?

I can't find the perfect wedding invitation design?
The third link has a few different ones.

Have you thought about creating your own? Michael's, Office Depot and other office supply stores carry the full package then you can take the paper home and print your own wording and any picture on the front that you feel is the personality of you both. You can go on line and find free wedding clip art for beautiful pictures. You can even type in clip art and a specific picture you might be thinking of.

Try a half page beautiful card stock print the wedding invitation information, on the top try the thin colored paper to match your wedding colors, or white and print a picture of the two of you, tie a ribbon bow on the top and you have a personalized invitation that came from the heart. Any one can find a design that everyone else has.

If you use invitations with a picture of you both this will let those out of town guests who have not met the Groom or the Bride to have a keepsake photo.

Best Wishes

If you go with her though, allot time for the process! It's a mom and pop shop so each step takes a little while. The owner is super nice though, and really helpful. (I live across the country from her, so we've done the whole thing via email)

If you could design a building of any type for someone, what would it be and why?

Please state who for too : )

I would design a beautiful big house for my family in the future in the country somewhere, where I would spend the rest of my days with the one I loved...and my parents too - I want to look after them during old age. Hahaha!! ; )

We would have a pool, a master bedroom, 4 ensuite bedrooms, a lounge with a piano, a wine seller and a wonderful garden where the kids can play. And not forgetting, a gorgeous walk-in wardrobe and shoe-rack for the beautiful wife - because she will need it. Hahaha!!

Have a good evening, I'll look forward to your answers!!! All the best : )

I am looking for some ideas to help design a front drive?

at the moment i am having a extension built and the front garden has been hard cored the size is 40ft x50ft and there is 2 dropped kerbs ready for a in and out i am worried that if i have it all paved it will look like a car park

I am looking for some ideas to help design a front drive?
Leave space for a shrub or two with staggering winter fragrance and watch passersby stop and sniff the air. Wintersweet (Chimonanthus) is the best, but most Viburnums are good too. Or jsut plant a Katsura Tree (Cercidiphyllum) and enjoy the smell of candyfloss drifitng off on autmn mornings.

great site!!
Reply:consider laying a circle pack with the paving or leave a section and gravel it to add more shape. have a look at plaspave or marshalls for ideas on products available
Reply:Go to a company which sells slabs, block paving etc., and get some free booklets. These are full of illustrated designs, materials and prices. You will be spoilt for choice.
Reply:Design it on your PC first and see how it looks, that way you can change it around and try new ideas before actually doing the work. For a good program for this, check out http://www.buddyandoscars.com/computer_e... I use these programs myself, and I have no complaints. In fact, using them helped me avoid a very costly mistake re-locating the toilet when I remodeled our master bath by being able to look at the finished room in 3D before I did any of the actual work.

Can shale be used effectively for a garden path?

I want to install a shale path in my front yard. I live in the Sierra Foothills in California. A friend is excavating to build a structure and came upon what we think is shale NOT SLATE. I love it's natural look so when she offered it to us for free I decided to design the front path with it. But I am concerned it won't be structurally strong enough to handle the very littel foot traffic it will ge weekly, and will therofre deteriorite too quickly. Can you advise. Thanks

Can shale be used effectively for a garden path?
It will be fine for foot traffic. It does, however, make for a lousey driveway. The weight of cars can destroy it.
Reply:First to determain the strength just get a sample of the stone and walk on it ten or twenty times to determain Then, go to www.DiscountHomeGardenDecor.com/ to find path stones and garden decor to make it look right
Reply:Well, depth of the pices is critical, thin slab, no they won't handle foot traffic over time. Even the thicker slabs will break apart with each winter. My concern is shale is awfully slippery when wet. is is just sedimentary mud.

Is there anyone in the UK in need of a landscape gardener i work in the Cheshire area?

I do Driveways, patios fencing and also re-design gardens, i've been doing this job for the last 13 years and been self employed for 5 years but in 2004-5 i took a year out to go traveling and now i'm back to re-build my business and need more clients than i already have ,so if you need work doing and you live in cheshire (uk) please call

Is there anyone in the UK in need of a landscape gardener i work in the Cheshire area?
There is an old saying 'If business is good it pays to advertise, if business is bad you've got to advertise'!!

You need to get a few quid together have loads of leaflets printed out 'Free quotes given' 'Unbeatable prices' all the usual guff then really mean it!

No use at all trying to advertise on here, in fact just about negative

You are not begging for work you are offering a service cheaper and better than all others in the area! Aren't you???

You will know from past experience that once you have completed a few jobs at a very fair price word of mouth will take over.

Just prepare for a few adverse comments from this forum on the subject of advertising, I just thought I would get this in before battle commences!! Good luck on your enterprise.

Where do you start your garden seeds: Indoors .or. Outdoors?

This carefully designed question should not be confused with an invitation to chat.

Where do you start your garden seeds: Indoors .or. Outdoors?
Hey Anon,

Both. Depending on the type of plant.

Indoors, Tomato for example, where you can watch them sprout, select the ones you want to promote to your garden, weed out the weak ones, and show the kids how it is done. Indoors, because you can start them early too, prior to the end of winter.

Some seeds like carrots, radishes, corn, are best started outside in beds or rows, then you thin them outside - they do not transplant well, and you need a lot of the plants, too many for jiffy pots.
Reply:Inside is best for seeds, but bulbs can be put right outside.
Reply:Both.

I start onions, leeks lettuce, cukes, zucchini, kale, broccoli, cabbages, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, chard, basil, celery and parsley indoors.

Arugula, spring mix, spinach, corn, beans, winter squash, garlic, radishes, beets, turnips, scallions, peas, carrots, potatoes, cilantro outdoors.
Reply:Outside, learn from wintersown.org or dot com have mine saved on the computer. But it lets plants start as mothernature intended almost. Lot less fuss I promise.
Reply:Indoors.
Reply:I never do anything indoors. If you plant them outside at the right time, you shouldn't have to sprout anything indoors. Even my cockscomb, which I have heard people say should be started indoors, I sow it right outside. Less of a shock to the plants, and less work for me. Sure they may bloom later, but does it really matter if its better for the plants?
Reply:Depends on the seeds you're planting. Beans, corn and carrots do not transplant well. Tomatoes, onions, peppers do. Cabbage family plants actually benefit from transplanting.
Reply:I do both, but not every year.
Reply:Depends on the seed. Beans do not transplant well so I start them outdoors. Tomatoes are fine if they're moved.

The Muse
Reply:Indoors, but mainly because 6 wks before I can plant outside I need to grow something. We get some long cold winters in OH

I am a garden pot exporter to USA. I want to know what color the people will like most ?

Is there with design or plain color you like most. Is there light solid color like pink , like blue, lavendar , apple green ,pear color can sale

I am a garden pot exporter to USA. I want to know what color the people will like most ?
I personaly like the plain clay pots, I look at the different shapes to make an interesting group. To me the plants are to give the color not the pots, I like a solid plain base.
Reply:I don't buy plants that come in expensive pots. I buy plants that I can transplant where I want them so what is most important to me is price, not color. I don't want to pay extra for a pot.

You would do well to stick with a color that compliments the plants and neutral colors or dark colors which includes terra cotta. But if I'm buying decorative pots, I want something different. I don't buy clay pots-too hot here. I don't buy plain pots. I look for something that noone else has and lots of luck with that one. . .
Reply:Best color to send is Black everyone uses that color.
Reply:Any color is nice as long as it goes with the garden theme.I would love to see more pots with angels on them. They sale the figurines, but never the pots.....
Reply:Is it the throwaway kind of pot? If so, then, who cares? If it's the hanging-basket type, white shows the dirt, so I prefer the terra cotta colour, which also is a neutral. People are pretty sick of the dark green ones.
Reply:I love plane clay pots they go with all colors of flowers and ivy etc..
Reply:I love terra cotta, clay pots, plain terra cotta, works good for me
Reply:If it is ceramic pots you export, I would go with neutral colors. I have invested in many on my back patio. I have a dark brown, sage green and some others that match by back yard theme. Personally, I would not invest in colors like pink and lavender. I would select colors that would appeal to a variety of people like khaki, black and brown.

Pick colors that would match or compliment outdoor furniture or house colors. This will help the buyer pull together the overall look for their back yard or even interior. I actually have some red ceramic pots inside.

structured gardens get on my nerves. LOL!

anyway, wild gardens in my opinion are soooooo beautiful.

although some groomed type designed gardens look very pretty.

Do structured 'groomed' type gardens appeal to you more?OR wild victorian style gardens?
Victorian...but then again, I like mixing “old” with “modern”…it’s quite annoying when I can’t get the two to flow correctly…
Reply:I tend to like the way things grow naturally and unless they get in my way I like to see what they'll do without tampering with them. I am fond of the free flow and it makes managing the garden easier.
Reply:Really I like both. I like to have a wildflower garden, and several more arranged and planned gardens.

I do love wildflowers though.. I like the little surprises, I guess. =)
Reply:Ones that I don't have to take care of are my favorite... I have wild flowers and I don't weed...

How do I get a job in a field I don't have any work experience in?

I've done mostly customer service %26amp; do NOT want to do it anymore. While I understand the majority of jobs do have some level of customer service, I am looking for something that isn't predominantly CS.

I really want to do Landscape %26amp; Garden Design, however I don't have a degree.

I've posted my resume on 6 different job search sites %26amp; keep getting hits for CS, even though I put a cover letter up saying that's not what I'm looking for.

I've been out of work for almost 3 months now %26amp; am getting very frustrated. Any ideas?

Oh! I can't do Landscape Laborer due to previous physical injuries, so that makes it more difficult.

How do I get a job in a field I don't have any work experience in?
Suggestion: work in customer service at a landscaping company.....

There are these wonderful places (forgive me that I don't know the language but I am not a landscape person...I just visit them)...that specialize in helping people with money create absolutely beautiful yards. They may sell yard art, or lawn furniture...or other things that can be used in a yard or garden...it is not Home Depot! There is one in my city at least...and they are beautiful to visit because they give inspiration to others to spend on their yard.

That is the part that will work for you. You will help inspire others to make beautiful investments in their yards. Example of a website of such a place: http://www.fifthseasongardening.com/.

These places will hire you...and you can get to know the people in the industry. Then you can move on to your perfect job...just put on the perfect look for the job, hand them your resume, and tell them why you love this industry and why you will make them money. That is all it takes. YOU can do it....

Avoid job search sites, they want experience. Sell your fabulous personality....artsy people use their personality to get them there. You can do it....It doesn't require physical labor just a smooth tongue...and you have that as you have tons of experience in the CS industry.

Perfect fit. You just don't see it yet.

How do I get a doggie door in the back of my garage? Is it possible?

Winter is coming and my big lab has a dog house, but I dont want him out there in the Illinois winter. I cannot put him in the house because he is so destructive. Its not a good idea.

I though about building a pre designed garden shed with windows from a manufacturer, and putting him in there, but again, he chews and would destruct the shed, so now I think I will just put a doggie door in the back of the garage. How much do you think it would cost? Whats involved? I want a door that swings like saloon doors or something that.

Any ideas to help me decide what to do?

How do I get a doggie door in the back of my garage? Is it possible?
You can purchase pet doors at building supply or hardware stores... the type you would most commonly see located in the bottom half of a 'human' door... but you can also mount these in a wall. The installation is the same as putting one in a 'human' door.

I would go with one of these rather than 'swinging' doors... with the flap on them, they keep the warm air in better, and most versions have a feature where you can slide a panel down over them to keep the pet inside, or out, as necessary.

I would also suggest that you think about getting a 'crate heater'... this is a small heating pad, that slips underneath your pets bed (about $25).... it will keep em warm all winter :) Also a heated water dish (about $10) to keep the water from freezing. You don't want to dehydrate your pet.

Have Fun
Reply:try lowes, menards, any large out let, pet shops , there is a doggie door thats in a kit, most have a magnetic door flap, and a plastic cover to block it,

exept to pay around $50,
Reply:There are really some questions that I have. Otherwise I would say no problem just get someone to install a doggie door in the wall. It wouldn't be difficult to get a carpenter to make you the type of door you are thinking about. But is your backyard fenced in so the dog isn't on a chain. If he is on a chain I would say your door would have to be of the curtain variety or he might get caught up in the door.

My son made doors for our porch that have wooden doggie doors in them. If I could I would post a picture of them. We actually have an out door and an in door. This because the previous doors were light screen doors and they were made with one opening out and one in so the dogs could push the whole door open. So he just made the smaller doggie doors to open in and out the same way. Certainly the doggie door insert could have been made to swing as you have suggested. Also I have a suggestion about your dog being destructive. Dogs need a lot of exercise, and generally they won't exercise on their own they like company. I have seen several cases where a problem dogs exercise was increased and the bad behavior became a thing of the past. Labs can be high energy dogs, so if you aren't exercising the dog very much you might want to see that it gets major exercise twice per day. Also you might think about watching Cesar Milan 'The Dog Whisperer'. He also has a book out. His thing is to teach the owners to be the Alpha dog of the pack. His methods work.

As to cost . . . ???? It would depend on the situation. What kind of walls do you have in your garage? Is it brick? Do you have a fenced in yard? Do you have a man door that opens into the fenced in yard (if you have one.)? As you can see it would be difficult to put a price on the situation without knowing all the particulars.

Inexpensive Garden Edging?

I am looking for some inexpensive Garden edging ideas to surround my entire yard perimeter. I like clean lines and the design is a kidney shape. Any ideas besides Plastic edging?

Inexpensive Garden Edging?
collected stones, used bricks?
Reply:small treated logs or square beams would give you straight lines, and would probably be cheaper than stones. I've seen these used in several yards, and like the look.
Reply:Go to home depot they have it all, and will help you design it.
Reply:search on Craigslist.org in your area ....People give away red bricks all the time...Placed half in the ground at a 45degree angle one after the other you can make all sorts of shapes. It is a nice attractive edging.. and cheap enough if you can get them for free!
Reply:The best solution is black vinyl edging. It is the cheapest option out there. You could use steel or aluminum edging but it is more expensive and a lot harder to work with. If you install the vinyl edging correctly it will look good and last a long time.
Reply:I was going to suggest landscape stones, but since you like the "clean line" then I will suggest landscape pavers that you can get at any garden center. Bricks would work as well and neither the pavers nor bricks cost much.

Good Luck
Reply:There are garden edging product available in many different materials, from rubber to steel to fiber to various latex, polyethylene, and other plastics and combinations. Most of these products are relatively inexpensive, and are flexible, which will allow you to bend and shape them to fit the design of your yard.

Have you ever designed your ideal playground or garden?

Yep, I just finished the project, too. I built a shed that I designed to look like a minature version of my house. I dug out two gardens, one in the front and one on the side. I installed a trellis in the side garden under the window and window box and placed a very cute little wrought iron bench with two potted herb plants on it. In the front garden, I have another tiny wrought iron garden chair with an impatien plant on it and on the wall I hung a large wrought iron planter with a basket that coordinates with the window box on the side. I lined both gardens with rocks I found while digging out the pad for the shed and used cedar mulch to finish both gardens. It looks absolutely charming and gives an adorable finishing touch to my side yard. It is an absolute pleasure to look out my windows and see it! And, it was fun to design, fun to create and we did all of the work ourselves, so it is a source of great pride.

Have you ever designed your ideal playground or garden?
Yep, just designed my front yard and had a landscaper do most of the work. It looks great!
Reply:Yes, I've done both. When we bought our house 7 years ago I decided to section off a part of our yard and designate it for our childrens play yard. I did this because I wanted a safe place for them to play and also to keep if free of dog poo. Anyhow, I built them a 12'X12' sand box with a shade canopy. Next to that I created a mulched and boarder place to put the swing set. After that I created a place to put a Little tykes play house surrounded with edging and planted mint, petunias, chamomile, and pumpkins in the borders of the play house yard. I made a tee pee of conduit and chicken wire and grew sugar snap peas, green beans, cucumbers up it for a fun place to play. Each year I grow a different veggie up the conduit structure. Not to mention all the various play yard toys. It all sounds like a lot and it is certainly something I never had as a child, maybe I over compensated a bit, but everything I did was either built by me or I found at a garage sale. I've even had people come by and ask me if I am running a day care. Anyhow, that is my playground design.

As for my garden, that is still a work in progress. I am a rose freak and have them everywhere. I also have many other plants and flowers. I'm into the cottage look so some of my flower beds are a well thought out mis match of flowers and plants. I tend to make themes of my garden beds. I have an OSU (Oklahoma State University) bed of nothing but orange and black flowers. A Mardi gras bed with gold, purple, and green, A bed of miniature roses. A bed of herbs and ediable flowers. And, a shade garden that I have to say is one of the most colorful beds in my garden. The Garden beds just keep growing because I'm always looking for another place to put one. I even asked my husband the other day if the neighbors would consider letting me rent a spot in their yard so I could grow melons. Next, after the kids are done with the play yard I plan on turning it into a veggie patch. I really look forward to that day. Well, there you have it.

Hope I didn't bore you to death.

What could a "directional system" mean, in terms of designing a garden?

I would recommend asking this in the gardening section of yahoo answers....my guess would be that the directional system would be the direction of water flow during a rain, basically how it would reach all the plants/go out of the garden. I'm not reallly positive though.

How much should I charge for garden maintenance (hourly rate)??

The work I will be doing is just bed and border maintenance, weeding, pruning, feeding watering etc No machinery will be involved (mowers hedge trimmers and the like). I have been gardening most of my life I guess and I have almost completed courses in garden design and planting design. I also have my RHS General Certificate in Horticulture so I know my stuff!!

How much should I charge for garden maintenance (hourly rate)??
You will need to know what the going rate for that type of service in your area. Here in our area, gardeners charge by the month and depends on how big the gardens are and what type of work they are expected to include in the contract. Take a survey and determine what you are worth based on that.
Reply:I'm doing the same thing this year, and I am charging $25./hr

That includes ammending the soil and planting the product. Can also include creating and bordering new beds / gardens.

No construction. No water features. No koi ponds.

Last year I charged $17. / hr and people thought that was a bargain.

Look into completing the Master Gardener program through your local counties Extension Office. It will be all research based information and usually really inexpensive.
Reply:I would say at least $15-$20 an hour. Most people would GLADLY pay that for manual labor. As you get more customers, you may be able to charge $25+
Reply:Assuming you want to make a profit and not just work for wages and knowing you must buy gasoline (petrol) and drive your truck, buy clothing for work, you must charge at least $25.00 USD per hour. Do not get a reputation for being a cheap gardener. Be an expensive one. It 's a great reputation to have. Be the best. People will pay for the best.
Reply:Depends on the size of the town. In a rural area, I would charge a little over minimum wage or between 7 and 10 dollars per hour. If you have wealthy patrons and live in the east, probably double that, people make twice as much in the east as in rural states such as Wyo, Dakotas, etc.

If I charged 15 dollars an hour in Montana, I would get no business.
Reply:It is totally based on the area you live. I've heard about gardeners getting $50.00 per hour, and I've heard $10. Call of some lawn service companies that offer additional services like garden maintenance get a feel for what you can ask.

How would you classify plants into different uses for design purposes?

Trees, Shrubs, "perennials", groundcovers, vines, grasses????

and if anybody can help me understand what a "perennial" is i would really appreciate it. It seems to be a very vague term, since many flowering shrubs could also be called "perennials" and shrubs could also be considered "groundcovers" as well, making "groundcover" a confusing term as well.

But I think when you are classifying plants you should divide them into their uses in a garden , right?

How would you classify plants into different uses for design purposes?
I start with total shade, partial shade, partial sun, full sun. Then under those catagories do FLOWERS, annual(have to plant every yr) or perrinnials(they come back yr after yr)then SHRUBS-flowering or non flowering, large, medium, small, evergreen or deciduous, GROUND COVERS-evergreen, flowering, deciduous. TREES-by size, sun , evergreen, flowering, deciduous. Stick with local specialties for example in Portland Or roses, rhodies, azaleas all all easy to grow. Flowers take some maintenance. Shrubs very little.

I usually have something tall in the back, (tree, shrub, flowering or not)then taller perennials, med perennials, shorter perennials, and then mix annuals thru out. This is my pattern for all sun exposures. Mixing it up. Decide if you want a very tidy look or a wild look. Grasses are very popular and come in varitey of sizes and color. Usually come back every yr. Good luck, have fun!
Reply:landscaping terms are a hodgepodge. "groundcover" isnt a term you find in botany.

perennial is used to separate plants from annuals and biennials.

an annual completes its cycle in a year. a biennial takes 2 years.

a perennial is everything else -- and from there they are divided into herbaceous and woody.

herbaceous would be most flowering perennials. trees and shrubs are woody perennials.
Reply:Perennials are plants that stay active throughout many years. For instance, sunflowers only grow for one year, so they aren't perennials. Shrubs that are perenials means that they won't produce and then die out at a certain time of the year, they will grow for two or more years(depending on how good it is taken care of). Shrubs, are small bushes with one small trunk; some shrubs can also be a ground covering, depending on how far out the shrub will grow. For instance, celentro shrubs work great as a sigle year ground covering, although, they aren't perennials because they live for one year.

What kind of rocks do you need for a rock garden? What patterns should you make? How do you make a model of it
I want to be really respectful here; but what might be the critical need in asap?

Why a Model?

Certainly there is more than one suggestion. ROCKS local to you; Rocks collected from various travels; Very unique; very large; etc.

I did a job for a woman in WA who had her entire ROCK garden lined with sea glass as "mulch"

Pattern is a personal choice. Natural might be one way; some sort of trail equating to places and times when/where you found them; Hearts; Butterflys;;; anything.

Will "Isabella's Garden" cross stitch pattern look good on a black cloth? Is black cloth OK to use with it?

(Isabella's Garden is a cross stitch pattern of a girl in gown blowing bubbles. It is from the Lavender and LAce collection and designed by Leavitt-Imblum if I am not mistaken)

Will "Isabella's Garden" cross stitch pattern look good on a black cloth? Is black cloth OK to use with it?
It's always 'ok' to use whatever color you'd like. = )

The bubbles %26amp; bright colors in the design will certainly stand out against a black or dark fabric. You might lose some of the detail from the outlining of her hair, etc with darker colors, but it should still be nice overall.

Having said that, my personal opinion would be to use a color in the blue family to represent the sky behind her - the hand-dyed fabrics that actually are blue %26amp; white would be wonderful I think. (www.silkweavers.com, www.picturethisplus.com, www.enchantedfabrics.com, www.sassysfabbys.com are all good sources for hand-dyeds. To look at some of the classic regular colors, try www.wichelt.com and www.zweigart.com)

Its a beautiful pattern - happy stitching!
Reply:I found it online. The colors are pretty vibrant so it should be fine. The black fabric might wash out some of the darker details around the girls hair, just keep that in mind.

How do I design my bedroom with an Alice in Wonderland theme?

I will be getting a new bedroom in a few months and it is about medium size and I would like the decorating theme to be Alice in Wonderland. The Disneys movie and the scene where alice is in the Golden Afternoon Garden. You know, with the big flowers and mushrooms etc... I have a loft bed and they might build one of those ebcesses windowd where it goes out and theres a window seat. I also have a dresser that is raw wood so I can paint it or stain it. My bed is a light pine wood but I cannot stain or paint it.... sooo.... any ideas to decorate my room? Any I can start now before my room is built?

How do I design my bedroom with an Alice in Wonderland theme?
Heres some big flower stickups

Flower chair

Or you could put up a garden mural on one wall,

and decorate the rest of the walls with the flower stickups.

heres a cute alice in wonderland wall clock

Found some big butterfly stickups

Also have a look through bedroom picture links for some more ideas you could use in your room

This site has alice in wonderland murals

You could also use big flowers bedding

http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?i...

Add a bit more fun to the bedroom with

King of Spades Child's Arm Chair

Queen of Hearts Arm chair

Hope these ideas help you a little. Have fun creating your fantasy escape.
Reply:Get yourself a projector. Project images from the movie scene you are interested in right onto the wall. Get bedding colors right from the picture you chose OR go for a bright floral patterned spread. Curtains the same.

I would write across the room as a border the words to the Golden Afternoon song.

Also, I saw a really cute idea at the Christmas Tree shop of a little girl cutout with a mirror as the head. Why not paint a big Alice near your bureau and put a mirror as her face. Remember though that Alice was tiny for this scene so the flowers and mushrooms have to be HUGE in comparison to your Alice.

Good luck. I hope this helps a little.
Reply:paint the ceiling and upper part of the walls sky blue, and sponge clouds on the ceiling in white. then paint the lower part of the walls green, you could go with a green carpet too. then begin drawing in and painting bright colored flowers on the walls. like the pictures in your picture books. you can use the art bottled acrylics you find in the craft dept at walmart or michaels or hobby lobby. if you need any more help with the flowers let me know, i did a mural all the way around my grand daughters bedroom it included a floor to ceiling tree, flowers, a witches cottage, trees , flowers, shrubs fairies in the tree along with birds and butterflies and dragonflies, a castle on top of a rocky mountain and a wizard and dragon, a pirate ship in a cove and a mermaid on a rock, then i did sunken ships and greek like arcitecture and a sea horse that was swimming through all of that, and a moon and stars on the next section at the top and a cat under the window with a mouse and a grandfather clock went up the corner of the wall next to the window. shes two now and i started before she was born. she lives in the middle of a story book really. she points to what she wants to hear a story about and we have to make one up. oh and there is a frog prince by a little pond too. ribbitt, you can email me here if you like.

How much landscaping job cost?

I have been looking for somebody to do landscaping in our garden? I got 1 quate for Aus $ 500+.. for only to give us garden design %26amp; will come with us %26amp; show which plant to go where in the garden? Is the right price for only doing this?? Can anyone tell me the good %26amp; cheap lanscaping company ( in Sydney) to do all the job including planting , digging etc...?

How much landscaping job cost?
Don't know about things "down under" but just want to suggest as a general rule, to get professional advice, you have to pay a professional person's salary. There is some education involved and someone with experience in your area has even more valuable knowledge. Even for planting, I think it'd be worth it to pay for some experience. You could hire a strong high school kid for cheap, but if things are planted wrong and they all die, you're out all the money and have to start over.

Another thing, to give you idea what people pay for landscaping, when we built our house new, everything we read and were advised was to plan to spend at least 10% of the price of the house on landscaping. And over the first few years, we easily did that. That was starting from bare dirt, so included sod, a few big trees, shrubs, rock, mulch, etc.
Reply:I think that's $428 US dollars. That is a good price if they are any good. Remember putting in the wrong plants could cost you thousands. Do you get a drafted design for that in case you don't want to do it all at once?

I've been designing for 10 years. We had our own landscape installation business, so we would do the design for free if we got to do the installation. No draft. We charge $50.00 per hour in Atlanta for installation.

Wall design and faux finishes need some creative ideas?

I am a huge fan of Home and Garden but I personally lost my creative edge years ago. A friend of mine who is even less creative then me painted these really cute rabbits on her daughter's wall via overhead projector. She used a pencil to outline the fine detail and used craft paint. It looked amzing! I want to do that in my son's room. He loves the movie cars and wants a Lightning McQueen in his room so I think I am gonna give it a try.

Also I am going to Home Depot today to one of those paint clinics to get some information on Faux finishing. We want to do our family room with some sort of faux color.

Anyone else do anything to thier walls or have any cool design ideas?

Wall design and faux finishes need some creative ideas?
I do lots of childrens room decorating. An overhead projector works well. If you can draw you can pencil in a background and paint it in. Murals are really not that hard to do. Paint the wall all one color first. I would use a blue sky color. Then make a horizon line about one third up on the wall. Paint below the wall a grass green. Pencil in a winding road add a tree or some bushes then for detail use the projector to add Lightning McQueen onto the road. Acrylic craft paints work well on murals. Use latex for the basecoat. Also for large areas if you have the paint. Faux fininshes are usually very easy to do You can sponge or rag on or off the paint or glaze. Plastic bags work well to pull off glaze giving a leather-like look. You can comb or brush through glaze to give a fabric-like finish. All of these are pretty easy all though you may want to work with another person helping you. The venition plaster is a really nice look but it is a lot of work and a lot of sanding and mess. Not really hard though. But takes a few days before the job is complete. At least three. You can get a simular effect using a dry brush it just doesn't have the actual texture that the plaster has. Just a few ideas. Look through some of the pamplets and book while at Home Depot to get a feel of what you may like. Then see if they could demenstrate how to do it while in the class.
Reply:Then you must be a fan of Extreme Makeover Home Edition! You could go to my website, click on the Extreme logo or go to our gallery and search the children's catagories of artwork. This may give you some ideas.

Suppose u are designing a rectangular garden with an area of 350 sq. feet?

suppose u know the length of a rectangle with an area of 350 sq. ft. write an equation that would help determine the width.

Suppose u are designing a rectangular garden with an area of 350 sq. feet?
Let L be the length in feet

Let W be the width in feet

LW = 350

Now solve that for W (by dividing by W on both sides):

W = 350 / L

Answer:

The width is the area (350 sq. ft) divided by the length (L).
Reply:And I obviously meant dividing by 'L' on both sides. Report Abuse

Reply:well, if you know the length of the rectangle, and you know the area of the rectangle, then you just take the area and divide it by the length to find the width.

The equation would look like this:

Area / Length = Width
Reply:Area = length x width

width = Area/length = 350/length
Reply:divide 350 by the given length and you will get the width as the answer (350/length=width)
Reply:if L is the length, then 350 / L =width

Best Software for Landscape Design?

Does Autocad provide landscape design friendly version? any free library, module, instruction to input?

I need 3D animation for garden, is Maya the best? I heard 3D max is not that good,

How about Dynascape?

I have Vecterwork, the support is very bad, your opinion?

Best Software for Landscape Design?
The best software I've ever used is my own hands and feet. Yeah, still soft, no gloves.

Pencil and paper work, but hands on is my mode.

auto cad is convoluted and has very expensive tech support ($100.00 per hour at last count) if you experience any glitches. Don't think I'd use it for landscape disign. Construction, yeah....

Can't critique the other programs you're asking about.

Need information on Edna May Walling an Australian Horticulturist?

Edna is deceased now but there was a program on the ABC that did a story her life and how she designed gardens. This Program would have been televised in the early 2000's. She was also an author on books that were about garden design.

Need information on Edna May Walling an Australian Horticulturist?
Edna Margaret Walling was born on the 4th of December in Yorkshire, England. The birth was not recorded until January 1896 at St Catherine's House hence discrepancies by authors as to her date of birth.

Second daughter born to William (who had hoped for a boy) and Margaret Walling. He taught the tomboy Edna woodwork, perspective and scale.

Raised in the village of Bickleigh, Devon, Edna and her father enjoyed the country walks. The English gardens and countryside she loved are reflected in her garden designs.

One English garden visited was Gertrude Jekyll's Deanery Garden, Sonning. Edna later named her own Australian home Sonning. Jekyll's influence is evident in Walling's design

1911

The Walling family migrated to New Zealand. The migration was prompted by a series of events including the loss of her father's business to fire. Edna witnessed this fire and, strangely, would later lose two homes in devastating fires herself.

Walling spent a year on a Kituna country station working as a cook and a cleaner.

After this 'education', Edna turned to nursing in a private hospital in Christchurch. Although she enjoyed nursing she ceased her studies to join her parents who had migrated to Melbourne, Australia.

1914

Immigrated to Melbourne, Australia. Home to the Wallings was Arundel, a large boarding house in Commercial Road, South Yarra.

1916-1917

Attended Burnley Horticultural College as a full-time student from the 4th of September, 1916. Full-time female students were relatively new to the college, however part-time students were mainly women. Gardening and its design were seen as part of a housewife's duties and a feminine interest. "The instruction is arranged to suit women students in particular, but male students may also attend." Burnley Garden Prospectus, 1918.

1918-19

Received a pass mark of 78% at Burnley and was rewarded with certificate 44, the Certificate of Competency in Horticulture, on the 19th of December 1918.

Worked as a jobbing gardener - "After leaving that school I found myself having to earn my living 'doing' people's gardens - not quite 'doing them in' but almost. However they all appreciated my straight eye...and my strength..."

Inspired by the sight of a stone wall supporting a semi-circular terrace - "From then on, gardens for me became a chance to carry out the architectural designs in my head ..."

1920

Produced her first known gardening plan for Mr L. Heath, Linlithgow Rd, Toorak.

1921

Bought three acres of land at Mooroolbark and began building her first home, Sonning. Sonning was built from local and second hand materials.

1922

Bought 18 acres of land adjacent to Sonning. This land and the houses she was to build were to become the village of Bickleigh Vale based on her "scheme for the establishment of a model Devonshire village..."

1924

Began working with Eric Hammond (renowned construction contractor).

First article in The Home 1/12/24. Co-authored with Katherine Ballantyne - sister of the architect Cedric Ballantyne - who recommended Walling for one of her first garden design commissions.

1925

Wrote articles for The Australian Women's Mirror, The Australian Home Builder and The Australian Home Beautiful.

Designed her first country garden, Wairere near Mansfield, Victoria, commissioned by Major and Mrs Rutledge. She lived with the Rutledge family for three months while the garden was constructed. A plan of this garden was published in Australian Home Beautiful in February 1926.

1929-30

Designed the garden at Cruden Farm for Mrs Keith Murdoch (now Dame Elizabeth), Langwarrin, Victoria.

1930

Designed first garden in Adelaide, South Australia.

Commissioned by Mrs McMillan and the Misses Marshall to design Mawarra, Mt Dandenong, Victoria. Later she was to write that this was her most beautiful design.

1934

Gwynnyth Crouch began work for Walling as assistant, and lived at Sonning.

1935

Began working relationship with Ellis Stones, a stone worker. Ellis Stones went on to forge his own career in stonework and landscape design.

1936

Fire destroyed Sonning. On a windy day, while Gwynnyth Crouch and Walling were away, sparks from the fire were blown onto paper lying nearby and the house burnt to the ground. Poor water pressure meant that not much was saved. Walling made plans for Sonning II that same night.

Designed the Marshall Garden for Blanche Marshall (nee Sharp) Heidelberg, Victoria. This was her most informal suburban garden.

1937

Undertook major commissions in Hobart, Tasmania.

Designed three of her most significant gardens:

Eurambeen, Beaufort, Victoria, for Mrs Theo Beggs,

Boortkoi for Mr Andrew Manifold, Hexham, Victoria, and

the Carnegie garden for Mr and Mrs Douglas Carnegie, Toorak, Victoria.

Stopped writing her column Letters to Garden Lovers for The Australian Home Beautiful but continued to contribute articles about gardens, design and personal anecdotes until 1950.

1949

Designed villages at Port Pirie, South Australia and Mount Kembla, NSW, for Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty Ltd. The Mount Kembla village was built, but the Port Pirie village never eventuated.

1950

Discontinued all writing for The Australian Home Beautiful.

Began correspondence with Jean Galbraith, Australian botanist and writer.

1951

Moved to The Barn, a smaller cottage at Bickleigh Vale. Walling was "tired of looking after three acres".

The ABC broadcast two Walling talks: Improving the Farm and Curing Erosion and The Farmers' Friends.
