Search the web for Sunset Magazine. It used to be published here in California (may still be) as the "Magazine for Western Living" and they always had design projects and all kinds of ideas.

Better Homes %26amp; Gardens [bhg.com] website allows you to design your garden: put in it's dimensions, place plants, etc. They also have MaNy garden design ideas/layouts.





Have you tried a google search for "garden design"? I like to look at pictures [worth a thousand words!]; see if the library has any books that inspire your creative juices. As MSU said, drive around and see what looks good to you.





One can always hire a good landscape architect; if they're good, and you can afford it, they're worth it. [You might choose only to hire them to draw a Master Plan, and you buy/install the plants.] Have a talent you could barter for their services?
Reply:Design is something that is pretty much site-specific. You CAN get books and I'm sure find websites with completed projects to get ideas from. A quick Google search of design software turned up this page: http://landscaping-software-review.topte... looks like they have done a good job of rating some of what is available. I've found such software in the "bargain bin" at Staples before for next to nothing.





Take a look around your area for homes you are impressed with, that can give you some great ideas as to what to aspire to. You might want to consider taking a tour with a local Garden Club for ideas as well.





Often, the first things that come to mind with design are improving views out of the house. A well placed tree or tall bush can block an unsightly view or a direct view into your house by neighbors, so thats a good place to start.





Keep away from planting in straight lines, since this creates a set pattern. Also, use odd numbers of plants when planting a group, since this also tends to break up set patterns. Patterns may be good in formal gardens, but really create an eyesore when one of the plants is stunted or dies. This tends to draw the eye toward the flawed plant when the pattern is broken.
